ירמיהו, פרק נ׳, פסוק כ״ח

Jeremiah 50:28Sefaria

The collapse of the Babylonian empire triggers a sudden and urgent movement of exiles returning to their homeland. They carry with them a dramatic message of divine justice. The fall of Babylon is more than a mere shift in global power. It marks a profound religious and national closure for the Israelites, signaling the absolute end of their subjugation.

A great sound of escape echoes from the ruins of Babylon, representing the voices of the Israelites who are running from the collapsing kingdom and making their way back to Jerusalem [מצודת דוד, אברבנאל]. These individuals are actively escaping immediate peril [מצודת ציון, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. They are survivors who were already caught in the direct line of danger, facing the very threat of the sword, yet managed to make it out alive [מלבי״ם].

One might wonder why the Israelites are depicted in such a frantic state of flight, given that King Cyrus of Persia later granted them permission to return home peacefully. This urgent escape actually takes place during an earlier phase of the conflict, specifically when Darius first attacked and began to conquer Babylon. As his army assaulted the city, groups of Israelites fled the immediate war zone and headed for Zion. They understood that the unfolding destruction was not a random act of war, but the direct fulfillment of prophecy regarding the downfall of Babylon [רד״ק].

The primary goal of these survivors is to reach Zion and declare the news of the retribution that has finally struck Babylon. This declaration carries two complementary layers of meaning. First, it is God's vengeance, serving as a punishment for the desecration of His honor. Second, it is the specific vengeance of His Temple, acting as direct payback for the Babylonians burning the sanctuary and defiling its sacred vessels [מלבי״ם, אברבנאל]. Ultimately, these escaping survivors serve as a living testimony, raising their voices to prove that His justice has been fully revealed.
