The spiritual leaders of the nation choose to pacify the public rather than prepare them for harsh realities. They offer false comfort, actively trying to uproot the people's natural anxiety about impending disasters [מצודת דוד, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. Presenting themselves as healers, these leaders pretend to mend the deep fracture that afflicts the entire congregation of the nation [מצודת ציון, רד״ק].

This supposed healing, however, is handled with deep disrespect [מצודת ציון]. The leaders attempt to calm the public using cheap, shameful statements [מצודת דוד], casually broadcasting positive and comfortable political forecasts [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. They repeatedly promise a future of peace, assuring the nation that everything will work out and no harm will arrive. Yet, these assurances are nothing but lies and deceit. Ultimately, reality strikes them in the face, revealing that there is no peace to be found [מצודת דוד, ביאור שטיינזלץ].
