Jeremiah 8:9Sefaria

Relying solely on human intellect while disconnecting from morality and divine truth ultimately leads to catastrophic failure. When a society elevates worldly knowledge above spiritual foundations, its leaders eventually discover that their accumulated wisdom is entirely worthless during a genuine crisis.

Those who boast of their intellectual status are destined to face extreme disgrace. Instead of fulfilling their duties, these leaders and scribes have completely failed the public. Rather than guiding the people to repent and return to God, they choose to pursue external, secular wisdom while entirely abandoning the study of Torah Because they reject God's word, disrespect it, and even deny its divine origin, they strip themselves of the very protection that could have saved them from impending disaster [רד״ק, אברבנאל].

Without the foundation of God's truth, one must question the true source and value of their intellect. Their knowledge is effectively empty, leaving them with nothing to rightfully boast about Consequently, these supposedly wise individuals will be caught in their own web of lies. They will find themselves trapped by the very evil approaching them, completely unable to orchestrate their own rescue

The resulting downfall brings a profound, paralyzing shame. This extreme disgrace is accompanied by a deep shattering of the soul, characterized by overwhelming fear, panic, and humiliation Because they spurned the Torah, which is compared to a bride consecrated to God, they face a precise, measure for measure punishment where their own wives and fields will be handed over to strangers [אברבנאל].

This abandonment of God's word triggers a deep moral rot throughout all layers of society, resulting in widespread greed, theft, murder, and adultery. Rather than halting this decline, false prophets and corrupt priests actively enable it, soothing the public with empty promises of peace. Despite the severity of their abominations and the doom looming over them, these wicked individuals remain entirely incapable of feeling any genuine, internal remorse. Because they lack true shame, their ultimate end is sealed. They will collapse under the weight of their own sins, falling as casualties in the valley of slaughter when their final punishment arrives [אברבנאל].
