מַבְלִ֥יגִיתִ֖י עֲלֵ֣י יָג֑וֹן עָלַ֖י לִבִּ֥י דַוָּֽי׃

A profound cry of internal brokenness captures a painful struggle between the desire for comfort and a bitter reality. The primary approach among commentators is that the prophet himself is speaking. He attempts to gather his strength, hold back his grief, and leave his sadness behind [מלבי״ם, רד״ק]. He may even be surrounded by men and women offering comfort and support [רד״ק]. Yet despite these efforts, he is unable to find peace because his heart is overwhelmed by a deep, sickening pain [מצודת ציון, ביאור שטיינזלץ, מצודת דוד, צאינה וראינה, אברבנאל].

This intense heartache stems from several intertwined causes. First, God has revealed to him harsh visions of the disasters destined to fall upon the nation [רש״י]. Second, the prophet is exhausted by deep frustration because he constantly warns the people, but they stubbornly refuse to listen [רד״ק]. The impending tragedy feels so real to him that he can already hear the cries of the people suffering in a distant exile. He hurts knowing that the nation abandoned God and ignored the spiritual medicine offered by the Torah and the prophets, sealing their fate for a long banishment [אברבנאל]. In this way, he does not just grieve as an individual, but carries the collective pain of the entire community [ביאור שטיינזלץ].

In contrast to this view, another perspective suggests that the people themselves are speaking rather than the prophet. According to this approach, the people appear strong and composed, but this does not come from genuine hope or inner fortitude. Instead, they are compared to a person suffering from a terminal illness that has spread all the way to the heart, causing a complete loss of feeling. The tragedy is not that they are strong, but that they are completely numb. Their ability to remain calm and ignore the severity of their situation is the clearest sign that their spiritual sickness has destroyed their soul and their capacity to feel [מלבי״ם].
