בָּעֵ֣ת הַהִ֣יא נְאֻם־יְהֹוָ֡ה (ויציאו) [יוֹצִ֣יאוּ] אֶת־עַצְמ֣וֹת מַלְכֵי־יְהוּדָ֣ה וְאֶת־עַצְמוֹת־שָׂרָיו֩ וְאֶת־עַצְמ֨וֹת הַכֹּהֲנִ֜ים וְאֵ֣ת ׀ עַצְמ֣וֹת הַנְּבִיאִ֗ים וְאֵ֛ת עַצְמ֥וֹת יוֹשְׁבֵֽי־יְרוּשָׁלָ֖͏ִם מִקִּבְרֵיהֶֽם׃

The impending destruction is portrayed as a catastrophe so absolute that its reach extends beyond the living to shatter the peace of the dead. In this grim reality, not only will the newly fallen be denied a proper burial, but the resting places of those who died long ago will be violated, their bones violently uprooted [מלבי״ם]. These remains will not surface by some natural occurrence; rather, foreign enemies will actively and forcefully extract them from the earth [רד״ק].

There are differing perspectives on why these graves will be disturbed. One view suggests that the sheer scale of the chaos and ruin will lead to a complete disregard for ancient burial sites, causing the bones to be carelessly tossed aside [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. However, the primary approach among commentators points to a more deliberate and malicious motive. The enemies will intentionally desecrate the graves to humiliate the dead, serving as a divine punishment from God that pursues the people even after life has ended. In a striking irony, these bones will be scattered and exposed beneath the sun and the moon—the very celestial bodies these individuals worshipped while alive. Consequently, the ancestors of the past will share the exact same fate as the newly slain, both reduced to unburied waste upon the soil [אברבנאל, צאינה וראינה].

This desecration will sweep across the entire social order, sparing no level of leadership. The judgment includes the kings of Judah, government officials, priests, prophets, and ultimately the ordinary citizens of Jerusalem [מצודת דוד]. Regarding the leaders, some understand that this refers specifically to deeply corrupt figures, such as idolatrous priests and those who delivered false prophecies [מצודת דוד]. Alternatively, another perspective maintains that the kings, officials, and priests are held accountable simply due to their positions of public authority. Even if these leaders were righteous in their private lives, they bear this severe posthumous punishment because they failed to correct and guide the nation away from its sins [חומת אנך].

Although historical records detailing the destruction of Jerusalem do not explicitly mention the invading armies exhuming graves, the prophetic warning alone serves as proof that this horrifying event did indeed take place [רד״ק].
