Human beings enter the world as empty vessels, wild and untamed. At the very beginning of life, a person possesses no inherent wisdom, resembling a young, wild donkey roaming freely without direction. Yet, this low starting point is exactly what allows for profound spiritual and intellectual growth. Through effort and learning, an individual can acquire understanding and ultimately fulfill a higher purpose.
The primary approach among commentators views this journey as the essential process of mental and moral maturity. Because a person is born hollow and devoid of knowledge, they serve as an empty container ready to be filled. Wisdom does not develop on its own; rather, a person must actively direct their heart toward learning and asking questions to achieve personal completeness [תקות אנוש]. Beyond simple ignorance, there is a deeper moral challenge to the natural human condition. From birth, a person carries destructive tendencies akin to a desert beast and lacks the independent ability to recognize whether their actions are truly righteous or wicked. Consequently, they must pray for God to open their eyes and cleanse them from hidden errors [רמב״ן]. It is within this struggle that suffering and life's trials find their purpose. Hardships act as catalysts meant to awaken and accelerate a person's development. When an empty and spiritually weak individual faces a difficult test, they are forced to battle their base urges. Through this inner conflict, they gain true awareness, elevating themselves from the level of a wild animal to the highest spiritual rank of a human being [אלשיך].
Despite this incredible potential for growth, human understanding remains fundamentally restricted. A contrasting philosophical perspective argues that humanity can never fully grasp abstract, divine wisdom. Just as the physical nature of a wild donkey is entirely incapable of containing human intelligence, human beings are naturally confined by their own limits. God designed every creature with a specific capacity. People can only process knowledge through their physical senses and cannot achieve a purely abstract intellect; if they could, they would cease to be human and become angels [מלבי״ם].
