אִם־אַ֭תָּה הֲכִינ֣וֹתָ לִבֶּ֑ךָ וּפָרַשְׂתָּ֖ אֵלָ֣יו כַּפֶּֽיךָ׃

Zophar shares a core belief with Job's other friends, Eliphaz and Bildad: a person's life circumstances are the direct result of their actions. However, they also maintain that the door to healing and closeness with God is always open for those who choose to change their ways [תקות אנוש]. The journey to repair this relationship begins with an internal spiritual awakening, specifically the preparation of the heart.

Commentators differ on what this inner preparation involves. Some view it as a conscious decision to repent and turn back to God in the wake of personal suffering [רש"י]. Others understand it as a deep personal inventory, requiring a person to carefully examine and evaluate their past actions [רמב"ן]. Another perspective suggests it is a call to expand the mind with wisdom, allowing a person to reach their full spiritual potential [מצודת דוד].

Following this internal readiness, the next step involves an outward physical action of reaching out. The primary approach among commentators is that this refers to spreading one's hands in prayer and plea to God [רש"י, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. The purpose of this prayer is either to ask for forgiveness for past mistakes and a previous lack of dedication [מצודת דוד], or to ask God to provide guidance and clarity on how to serve Him correctly moving forward [רמב"ן].

In contrast to these views, a unique approach interprets this entire process as a psychological and philosophical proof of free will [מלבי"ם]. According to this idea, the act of reaching out is not directed toward God, but rather toward one's own heart. When a person prepares their thoughts and desires, their hands naturally respond to the heart itself. This means that the physical body immediately obeys the mind's commands, ready to carry out its will. This internal dynamic proves that a person is not forced by outside circumstances. Instead, the mind rules over physical actions, showing that the freedom to choose between good and bad rests entirely in human hands.
