איוב, פרק י״א, פסוק ז׳

Job 11:7Sefaria

הַחֵ֣קֶר אֱל֣וֹהַּ תִּמְצָ֑א אִ֤ם עַד־תַּכְלִ֖ית שַׁדַּ֣י תִּמְצָֽא׃

The infinite gap between limited human intellect and God's unattainable wisdom forms a central challenge in understanding human suffering. When faced with deep pain, the natural instinct is to search for logical reasons, yet the human mind is entirely unequipped to grasp the vastness of Divine calculations. The primary approach among commentators is that human beings are fundamentally incapable of understanding God's ways. Human perception is chained to physical senses and a finite intellect, making it impossible to apply standard human logic to an infinite Creator [מלבי״ם]. Just as a person cannot fully comprehend the massive dimensions of the physical universe, they certainly cannot grasp the hidden secrets of how God runs the world [תקות אנוש, חומת אנך]. It is simply impossible to investigate or reach the absolute limit of God's mind [ביאור שטיינזלץ, מלבי״ם].

This limitation exists on two distinct levels. On one hand, God's very essence is entirely beyond human reach and cannot be investigated at all. On the other hand, even when observing how God interacts with and oversees His creations, a person will never reach a complete, ultimate understanding of those actions [מלבי״ם]. This profound inability to understand God directly leads to an inability to comprehend Divine justice. Job cannot possibly know the true reason God brought suffering upon him [רמב״ן]. Furthermore, humans are completely unqualified to judge who is truly righteous and who is wicked. Divine justice is measured against a person's unique potential. A highly capable individual who is careless in their duties is considered wicked, while someone with limited abilities who simply does their best is considered righteous. Only God knows the hidden depths of the heart and the true capacity of each individual [מצודת דוד].

While the primary view focuses on the limits of human inquiry into God, an entirely different approach reverses the direction of the investigation. Instead of asking whether a person can comprehend God, the question becomes whether a person can withstand God's intense scrutiny [רמב״ן]. The challenge presented is whether one truly believes they have fulfilled every obligation required of them [רש״י]. This perspective points toward a future, exacting judgment in the heavenly court regarding a person's spiritual pursuits. A person is expected to strive for high spiritual achievements and delve into the deeper secrets of the Torah, rather than settling for an understanding of the limited physical world. According to this view, suffering may stem from wasting time and failing to immerse oneself deeply enough in higher wisdom, thereby falling short of one's true potential [אלשיך].
