איוב, פרק י״ז, פסוק י׳

Job 17:10Sefaria

וְֽאוּלָ֗ם כֻּלָּ֣ם תָּ֭שֻׁבוּ וּבֹ֣אוּ נָ֑א וְלֹֽא־אֶמְצָ֖א בָכֶ֣ם חָכָֽם׃

After a period of directing his words entirely to God, Job turns his attention back to his friends. He issues a powerful challenge, urging them to completely rethink their stance and reevaluate their harsh judgments [אלשיך, תקות אנוש]. He begins his address with a subtle shift in perspective, speaking about them as if they are distant observers before suddenly confronting them face to face. [מלבי״ם] views this as a sweeping declaration, a broad call to anyone listening to turn back and pay attention. [אלשיך] uncovers a deeper meaning in this transition, suggesting that up until this point, his friends have been standing so far outside the bounds of truth that it is as if they were not even part of the conversation. Now, Job is finally calling them to abandon their misguided path.

The primary approach among commentators is that Job is demanding his friends retract their previous arguments. He wants them to dig deeper into the truth and weigh their thoughts a second time. [מלבי״ם] notes that this invitation extends to everyone present, regardless of whether they have judged him favorably or critically. He wants them all to reconsider the facts and engage in an honest debate. At the same time, this is a personal request for them to draw near, allowing him to continue sharing the depths of his pain [תקות אנוש].

Yet, even as he invites them closer, Job delivers a stinging rebuke, declaring that not a single one of them possesses true wisdom. The commentators agree that this frustration is born out of their complete lack of understanding and their deeply flawed judgment. [רש״י] points out that they have resorted to mocking his claims. [רמב״ן] and [מצודת דוד] explain that their wisdom failed them the moment they accused Job of lacking reverence for God, or when they brushed off his immense suffering as simple divine discipline. Ultimately, Job feels entirely isolated in his experience. He senses that no one around him grasps his true intentions, understands the unique nature of his agony, or can offer him any genuine truth [אלשיך, תקות אנוש]. Left with no other conclusion, he determines that every single one of them is simply wrong [מלבי״ם].
