From the depths of profound suffering, Job voices a sense of absolute despair, feeling that his hopes, plans, and deepest thoughts have entirely collapsed. He senses that his life has slipped away and that he is on the brink of death due to his immense pain, leaving him without any hope in this world [מצודת דוד, מלבי״ם]. Another perspective suggests that it is not his life that has ended, but rather the days of peace and goodness to which he was accustomed [רש״י]. On a more spiritual level, it is proposed that his past days and good deeds arrived to testify on his behalf as he neared death, only to flee when it became clear his time had not yet come [אלשיך].

In the wake of this breakdown, Job finds that his thoughts and plans have been severed. These were not fleeting ideas, but profound thoughts anchored in his soul [מלבי״ם], or perhaps his personal plans to enjoy a long, peaceful life [רש״י]. The sheer weight of his illness, pain, and mental confusion prevents him from focusing or finding any strategy to achieve rest, causing these mental connections to completely break apart [מצודת דוד, שטיינזלץ, תקות אנוש]. An additional view links this mental severing to the fact that Job spoke harshly toward God [אלשיך].

The crisis deepens even further as the collapse extends beyond his future plans to the very core of his inner life. The primary approach among commentators is that these inner thoughts represent a spiritual inheritance. They are the ideas of wisdom, hope, and faith in God that were always firmly established in his heart, so deeply ingrained that they became an inseparable part of his essence [רש״י, רמב״ן, רלב״ג, מלבי״ם]. Alternatively, this is seen as a poetic reference to the branches of the heart, echoing the loss of his everyday thoughts and plans [אבן עזרא, תקות אנוש, אלשיך]. Ultimately, Job mourns that even his most solid, foundational beliefs and hopes have been entirely uprooted, leaving him completely empty and helpless.
