Job 17:12Sefaria

לַ֭יְלָה לְי֣וֹם יָשִׂ֑ימוּ א֝֗וֹר קָר֥וֹב מִפְּנֵי־חֹֽשֶׁךְ׃

Job's severe suffering, compounded by the harsh rebukes of his companions, shatters his perception of time and reality. The natural boundaries of the world dissolve, completely upending the established order of light and dark, day and night.

The primary approach among commentators is that this disorientation is caused directly by Job's friends. Their relentless mocking and torment drive his sleep away, transforming his nights into endless days of wakefulness [רש"י, רמב"ן, אבן עזרא, שטיינזלץ]. Others suggest that the sheer intensity of the pain itself scrambles his mind, taking matters that were once as clear as daylight and plunging them into the hidden obscurity of night [מצודת דוד]. On a deeper level, this inversion reflects Job's bewilderment at his friends' theology. He questions how they can possibly claim that the gloom of death and the grave is actually the dawn of true daylight, marking the beginning of eternal life [מלבי"ם].

This profound distortion of reality also alters how the presence of light is experienced amidst overwhelming darkness. From a perspective of deep despair, the heavy burden of suffering makes the day feel fleetingly short. When the sun sets, it feels as though the light had only just arrived a moment ago before vanishing entirely [רש"י]. Similarly, any light that appears to be within reach quickly retreats and moves away because of the encroaching gloom [שטיינזלץ]. The darkness of these troubles is so thick that the clarity of wisdom, which once felt close at hand, is completely pushed away [מצודת דוד].

Conversely, another approach views the shadow of death not as an end, but as a gateway to spiritual hope. The awareness of approaching death brings a comforting realization that the light of the World to Come is drawing near. Just as dawn breaks immediately following the darkest part of the night, and just as labor pains precede the birth of a child, the darkness of suffering in this world directly hastens the light of eternity. Ultimately, the very presence of this darkness and pain is the exact reason why the spiritual light of the next world is now close and accessible [מלבי"ם, אלשיך].
