איוב, פרק ל״ה, פסוק ז׳

Job 35:7Sefaria

אִם־צָ֭דַקְתָּ מַה־תִּתֶּן־ל֑וֹ א֥וֹ מַה־מִּיָּדְךָ֥ יִקָּֽח׃

Human actions, whether good or bad, do not affect God. An absolute gap exists between tiny human existence and the endless nature of the Divine, meaning that human choices neither add to nor take away from Him. Some people mistakenly believe that by fulfilling Commandments, they are somehow helping God. In reality, human beings are small creatures whose actions cannot impact the vastness of infinity [ביאור שטיינזלץ].

Furthermore, human actions are entirely physical. Because of this, they have no connection to God's pure spirituality, meaning that a person truly has nothing they can give Him [מלבי״ם]. Even if one were to imagine that a person possessed something worthy to offer, everything already belongs to God. Since all things are already in His possession, He has no need to take anything from a human hand [מלבי״ם, מצודת דוד].

Because human righteousness and the fulfillment of Commandments provide no benefit to God, a person acts entirely for their own sake. Doing what is right brings good to one's own soul. Likewise, when a person sins, they do not cause any harm to God. Instead, they only damage and defile their own soul. As a result, any punishment a person experiences is never a reaction to injuring the Divine. Rather, it is designed solely to cleanse and purify the soul from the impurity that has attached to it [אלשיך].
