In the animal kingdom, the protective instinct toward offspring is a nearly universal trait. Yet, a striking exception exists in the behavior of one unique bird. From the moment of its creation, God instilled within this creature a nature that sharply contrasts with the typical maternal drive [אבן עזרא, מלבי״ם].

While many birds, such as the stork, carefully construct their nests in high, secure locations like trees or rocky cliffs, this bird takes a completely different approach. It lays its eggs directly on the earth [מלבי״ם, ביאור שטיינזלץ, תקות אנוש]. The eggs are sometimes buried deep in the desert dirt [מלבי״ם], or they are left completely exposed on dusty roads where travelers and wild animals frequently pass [תקות אנוש, אלשיך]. To an observer, this behavior appears as sheer abandonment. This apparent neglect is driven by the bird's own pride and arrogance, which lead it to forsake its nest rather than sit and protect its young [אלשיך]. However, despite this profound lack of maternal care and emotional connection, the offspring are not left to perish. God's infinite wisdom takes over, guiding and guarding the exposed eggs until they successfully hatch [תקות אנוש].

The process of how these eggs are kept warm reveals further complexity in the bird's habits. The primary approach among commentators is that the mother bird does not incubate the eggs herself. Instead, she relies entirely on the natural heat radiating from the earth and dusty roads to warm them [מצודת דוד, אלשיך]. Alternatively, some suggest that she does remain to warm the eggs herself as they rest upon the dirt [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. A more unusual perspective proposes that the mother entirely abandons the nest, walking away to warm herself in the dirt from a distance, completely detached from her eggs [רש״י].
