The life of the wild desert donkey is defined by constant wandering and an independent search for food. This restless nature is exactly what makes it impossible to domesticate. The primary approach among commentators is that the animal spends its days actively scouting and exploring the mountains to find its own pasture [רש״י, מצודת דוד, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. Whatever it manages to discover through this thorough roaming becomes its food [רלב״ג, מלבי״ם]. However, alternative perspectives suggest that its diet is highly specific. Some propose it seeks out a particular type of mountain grass, while others believe it specifically hunts for the absolute finest and highest quality vegetation the mountains have to offer [תקות אנוש].

Even after finding a meal, the animal is never satisfied. It continuously seeks out any green grass, edible plant, or fresh patch of vegetation it can find [אבן עזרא, מלבי״ם, תקות אנוש]. This relentless behavior perfectly illustrates the creature's inherently wild and free spirit. Its endless search for food and its boundless appetite are the very reasons it cannot be brought under human control. No person could possibly provide enough food to satisfy its massive daily needs. If someone actually tried to force the animal into labor, it would instantly abandon the work, ignore its master, and flee back to the mountains to continue its endless hunt for fresh greenery [אלשיך].
