איוב, פרק ל״ט, פסוק י״ג

Job 39:13Sefaria

כְּנַף־רְנָנִ֥ים נֶעֱלָ֑סָה אִם־אֶ֝בְרָ֗ה חֲסִידָ֥ה וְנֹצָֽה׃

Observing the wonders of creation in the avian world sparks awe at the unique design and nature God granted to each bird. The primary approach among commentators is that God directs attention to a specific winged creature, though its exact identity is a matter of interpretation. Some view it as a large bird [רש"י, רמב"ן] or a songbird known for its pleasant voice and cheerful nature [אבן עזרא, רמב"ן]. Others identify it as the peacock, which spreads its colorful wings in a display of joy [מצודת דוד, אלשיך, שטיינזלץ]. Alternatively, the focus might be on the ostrich, a creature known for making constant sounds of mourning and wailing [מלבי"ם].

When examining the different physical traits of these creatures, a comparison emerges regarding the specific gifts God bestowed upon them. God questions whether He gave the peacock or the songbird their joyful nature and colorful wings just as He gave the stork its distinct wings and feathers, which are designed perfectly for its regular seasonal migrations [אבן עזרא, רמב"ן, שטיינזלץ]. Another perspective suggests a continuous description of the stork itself, depicting it as a cheerful bird that sings and slightly spreads its wings out of joy while making its sound [תקות אנוש].

The contrast between these birds also highlights different behavioral traits and physical limitations. The peacock spreads its magnificent wings filled with eye-like patterns, rejoicing in its own beauty. It proudly shows off to every side, as if defiantly asking whether the stork or any other bird possesses wings and feathers as beautiful as its own [אלשיך]. Conversely, a different approach highlights a stark physiological contrast by comparing the limits of the ostrich to the abilities of the stork [מלבי"ם]. While the ostrich boasts beautiful, long outer feathers, it lacks the strong main wing joint and the smaller feathers that the stork possesses. Because it is missing this structural strength and carries a heavy body, the ostrich remains forever grounded, unable to lift off and fly in the air.
