Certain creatures are naturally drawn to the most extreme and inaccessible environments on earth. It is the inherent instinct of this particular animal to establish its home in high, fortified places [אבן עזרא]. It seeks out the sheer peaks of mountains to rest and sleep through the night [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. Living at such extreme altitudes exposes the creature to fierce winds and biting cold, yet it remains completely unharmed by these harsh conditions [מצודת דוד, אלשיך]. Instead, it finds ultimate safety in a refuge far beyond the reach of human hands [מלבי״ם].

The landscape it chooses is jagged and unforgiving. It perches on sharp crags that jut out from the mountainside, much like a prominent tooth extending from a mouth [מצודת ציון, מצודת דוד]. Commentators offer slightly different but complementary visions of this elevated stronghold. Some view it as a massive, unyielding rock formation [רלב״ג], while others picture a towering natural structure [מצודת ציון] or a distinct, overhanging ledge extending from a great height [מצודת דוד].

Alongside the literal understanding of the animal kingdom, an allegorical approach connects this imagery to the sacred service in the Temple [רש״י]. In this view, resting securely upon the high rock represents Aaron the High Priest. It reflects the profound confidence and peace he possessed when placing the pan of incense upon the Foundation Stone.
