Judges 17:11Sefaria

An agreement forged between a wandering Levite and a man named Micah transforms a simple traveler into a central figure of local worship and a permanent household member. The Levite willingly accepts the offer to stay, though there are different views regarding his original intentions [מצודת ציון, שטיינזלץ, מלבי״ם]. Some suggest he initially planned only to be a guest for a few days without taking on any official religious duties. However, merely spending time in the home of a wicked person had a negative impact on him, ultimately dragging him into the corrupt practices of the house [מלבי״ם]. Another perspective argues that the Levite immediately agreed to stay and actively serve as a priest for the local idol [אברבנאל].

Once settled, the Levite is embraced as if he were one of Micah's own sons. On a practical level, Micah provides for all his needs, offering him full support and a permanent place at the family dining table [שטיינזלץ, מלבי״ם]. Beyond his inclusion in the family, the Levite assumes a highly specific ritual role. He steps directly into the position previously held by one of Micah's actual sons, who had been ordained and acting as the household priest up to that point [מצודת דוד].

This strategic replacement perfectly aligns with Micah's personal ambitions. By installing a Levite as his priest, Micah convinces himself that God will now show him favor. He believes his local worship has gained true legitimacy because the ritual service is finally being performed by someone born into the designated tribe of Levi, rather than an unqualified member of another tribe who is legally unfit for the role [אברבנאל].
