Judges 18:28Sefaria

The conquest of a city often hinges on the hidden vulnerabilities of its defenders. The city of Laish fell to the tribe of Dan with relative ease due to its complete geographic and political isolation, which left its people entirely defenseless. The residents had lived in a state of detached peace, a quiet existence that ultimately became their fatal weak point when the attack began.

When the invasion occurred, the people of Laish had absolutely no one to rescue them. Although the families who settled the city originally came from Sidon, the vast distance from the Sidonian center of government made any assistance impossible. The city was overrun long before news of the assault could even reach their allies Furthermore, the residents lived in total separation from their immediate surroundings, maintaining no contact with other people [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. They had failed to establish defense treaties or mutual agreements with neighboring groups who might have stood by their side during a crisis [מצודת דוד].

Beyond their social isolation, the physical terrain worked against them. The city was situated in a valley near an area called Beth-rehob This low elevation was a weak position that made the city highly vulnerable and easy to conquer [מלבי״ם]. Following their swift victory, the members of the tribe of Dan had to rebuild the city before they could settle there. This reconstruction was necessary because the attackers had completely burned Laish to the ground during the battle [מצודת דוד].
