שופטים, פרק י״ח, פסוק ח׳

The scouting mission reaches its conclusion as the spies return home to deliver their findings. After observing the land and forming a positive impression of the area, the scouts travel back to their fellow tribesmen in the cities of Zorah and Eshtaol [מצודת דוד, ביאור שטיינזלץ].

As soon as they arrive, the waiting brothers greet them with a very brief question. The primary approach among commentators is that this short inquiry is an incomplete sentence, simply asking the spies what they have to say and requesting a full report [רד״ק, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. The people left behind are eager for news about the territory that was chosen for them. Specifically, they want to know what the scouts discovered about the land itself and the nature of the people currently living there, needing to find out if the local inhabitants are strong or weak [רש״י].
