The arrival of the men of Dan in the hill country of Ephraim sets a calculated plan into motion. As the camp passes near Micah's home, the five spies who had scouted the area earlier inform the other warriors about the valuable ritual items inside, including an ephod, household idols, and a sculpted image. Together, they agree to steal these objects [אברבנאל].
To execute the theft, the men use a tactical diversion to lure the young Levite, who serves as the priest, away from the location. The spies first approach the house and greet the priest. Once he learns that six hundred armed men are standing at the city gate, he leaves the house and goes to the gate to see them. While the priest is distracted at the gate speaking with the warriors, the spies seize the opportunity. They slip back into the unattended house and take all the ritual objects without any resistance [אברבנאל].
