פרשת פנחס

Numbers 29:4Sefaria

וְעִשָּׂר֣וֹן אֶחָ֔ד לַכֶּ֖בֶשׂ הָאֶחָ֑ד לְשִׁבְעַ֖ת הַכְּבָשִֽׂים׃

The festival sacrifices serve as a profound reflection of the relationship between the entire nation and God. The precise measurements of the grain offerings that accompany these sacrifices carry both deep symbolic meaning and practical instructions.

The requirement to bring a single tenth-measure of flour alongside the seven lambs emphasizes a theme of national unity [רש ר הירש]. This uniform measure symbolizes God's careful watch over the nation as a whole, guiding its material and historical journey. This focus on the collective is especially significant during the sacrifices of the Jewish New Year. At this time, the material fate of the individual is decided as part of the broader national framework. This period of judgment ultimately reaches its peak during the festival of Tabernacles, when the people gather the earth's bounty with a renewed awareness of God.

On a practical level, this exact specification indicates that the Temple contained only one measuring vessel for this specific volume [תורה תמימה]. This establishes the accepted practice over an opposing view, which suggested the Temple housed two distinct measuring vessels. According to that alternative opinion, one vessel held the required amount only when the flour was heaped over its rim, and it was used for most grain offerings. A second, slightly larger vessel held the same amount when the flour was leveled flat. This leveled vessel was supposedly reserved for the High Priest's grain offering, which had to be split exactly in half, as a flat surface would prevent the flour from spilling during the division. However, the accepted rule maintains that only a single measuring vessel was used. The practical concern of spilling the flour is dismissed because the priests were known to be exceptionally quick and highly skilled in their duties, ensuring the flour was handled perfectly without the need for an additional, specialized vessel.
