משלי, פרק ב׳, פסוק י״ג

Proverbs 2:13Sefaria

הַ֭עֹ֣זְבִים אׇרְח֣וֹת יֹ֑שֶׁר לָ֝לֶ֗כֶת בְּדַרְכֵי־חֹֽשֶׁךְ׃

The choice between truth and falsehood goes beyond simple morality; it dictates the very reality a person inhabits, determining whether they walk through bright clarity or tangled darkness. The primary approach among commentators is that this focuses on individuals who abandon faith and truth to embrace deceit and false beliefs. In this framework, wisdom and truth are compared to light, while falsehood is equated with darkness [עמנואל הרומי, אמרי דעת].

To fully grasp this contrast, one must understand the difference between a main highway and its branching trails. A main road serves as the primary route connecting major cities, while smaller paths branch off toward side villages [מלבי״ם]. When following God's teachings and practicing good character traits, both the main highway and its smaller branches are perfectly straight. For instance, from the broad highway of mercy branch out specific trails of good deeds, such as giving charity or offering a kind loan. Every one of these routes is illuminated and direct. Conversely, in the realm of wickedness and false beliefs, it is not just the side trails that are shrouded in shadows; the main road itself is entirely dark, standing in direct opposition to the wisdom that lights up human hearts [מלבי״ם, אמרי דעת].

What drives someone to abandon the truth and wander off this illuminated route? Often, a person convinces himself that slightly bending the truth is acceptable, perhaps to achieve business success. To him, the honest trails appear narrow and restrictive, making the wide, comfortable road of deceit seem far more appealing. However, reality quickly proves that deceit cannot sustain itself. A person who chooses to lie is soon forced to invent additional lies to cover up the first. What initially seemed like a wide and easy road rapidly transforms into a complicated, tangled maze of darkness. Ultimately, experience reveals that there is no route safer or more secure than the path of truth [אלשיך].
