Proverbs 25:18Sefaria

Words carry the power of life and death, and bearing false witness holds a uniquely destructive force. The damage inflicted by deceitful testimony is equal in severity to the physical devastation caused by weapons of war [רש״י, רלב״ג, מצודת דוד]. Comparing speech to instruments of battle emphasizes that harmful words are never a minor offense; they are acts of severe violence and danger [עמנואל הרומי].

A false witness acts through three distinct types of weaponry. The first is a heavy, destructive tool, acting like a massive hammer that crushes rocks and bones [מלבי״ם, אלשיך], a battering ram that breaks down walls [ביאור שטיינזלץ], or a terrifying force that scatters people in all directions [עמנואל הרומי]. The second is a sword, and the third is an arrow, sharpened and perfectly prepared to pierce its target [מצודת ציון, ביאור שטיינזלץ, עמנואל הרומי]. Whether referring to the deceptive testimony itself or the person delivering it [אבן עזרא, מלבי״ם, עמנואל הרומי], these three weapons illustrate different dimensions of harm.

Commentators offer different approaches to explain this specific trio of weapons. One approach focuses on the range and method of attack. The hammer symbolizes a person who shatters relationships and spreads conflict. The sword represents direct, close-range injury. The sharpened arrow represents gossip and false testimony spoken in secret, striking a person from afar. Furthermore, these three weapons correspond to the three victims of malicious speech: the one who speaks is damaged like a hammer, the one who listens is struck by a sword, and the person being spoken about is pierced by an arrow [מלבי״ם].

Another perspective focuses on the psychological trauma of betrayal, noting that the deception often comes from a respected individual and a close companion. In this view, the damage consists of three distinct layers of pain. The heavy hammer that breaks bones symbolizes the deep psychological shock of realizing that someone considered moral and honest could commit such an evil act. The sword represents the sharp, piercing pain of being betrayed by a beloved friend. Finally, the sharpened arrow represents the actual financial or physical damage caused by the false testimony. Surprisingly, this practical loss is considered the lightest pain of the three [אלשיך].

Ultimately, combining these three weapons illustrates the total devastation caused by deceit. A false witness breaks, stabs, and kills the victim, leaving them completely defenseless against the assault [ביאור שטיינזלץ].
