תהלים, פרק ק״ז, פסוק כ״ד

Psalms 107:24Sefaria

׆ הֵ֣מָּה רָ֭אוּ מַעֲשֵׂ֣י יְהֹוָ֑ה וְ֝נִפְלְאוֹתָ֗יו בִּמְצוּלָֽה׃

Venturing far out into the open ocean brings a person face to face with the immense power of God and the marvels of His creation. The deep sea serves as a unique environment where His works and wonders are revealed in multiple ways. This wonder is first evident in nature itself, specifically in the massive size of deep ocean creatures and the powerful roar of the waves [רד״ק, מאירי].

Beyond the natural environment, these marvels are also visible in the wisdom and resourcefulness God granted to humanity. It is a wonder in its own right that people can survive over the ocean depths using simple wooden boards, particularly when facing a storm [רד״ק]. Additionally, the ocean displays God's absolute control over the physical world. He has the ability to throw the sea into sudden chaos and then quiet it instantly, entirely according to His will [אבן עזרא].

A question arises regarding exactly when during the journey the sailors are able to truly witness these divine wonders. The opportunity for such deep reflection actually occurs when the ship is moving slowly and calmly. During these peaceful moments, the sailors have the clarity of mind to look around and appreciate the works of God. This quiet observation stands in sharp contrast to the later parts of the voyage when a storm strikes. Once the violent weather tosses them up to the sky and plunges them down to the depths, terror takes over. In those moments of panic, their minds are no longer free to notice the wonders of creation [אלשיך].
