תהלים, פרק ק״ז, פסוק מ״ג

Psalms 107:43Sefaria

מִי־חָכָ֥ם וְיִשְׁמׇר־אֵ֑לֶּה וְ֝יִתְבּוֹנְנ֗וּ חַֽסְדֵ֥י יְהֹוָֽה׃ {פ}

Deep reflection on the constant ups and downs of life leads to a clear understanding of how God guides the world. A person whose heart naturally leans toward wisdom [מצודת דוד] and who has accepted its rules [מלבי״ם] is called to pay close attention to the unfolding events of history. Such a person must remember and hold these experiences in their heart [אבן עזרא, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. This internal focus means recognizing with absolute certainty that everything rests entirely in the hands of God. He is the one who raises up and brings down, grants wealth and takes it away, and brings both pain and healing [רד״ק, מאירי]. Alternatively, this focused attention can be understood as an act of waiting and expectation. It is a patient faith that, in the end, God will reward every person according to their actions [מאירי].

When a person deeply internalizes these truths, they begin to truly comprehend the kindness of God. The primary approach among commentators is that wise individuals will actively reflect on and study His kindness. However, another perspective suggests that the kindnesses of God will actually reveal themselves, naturally becoming clear to the person who takes these matters to heart [מצודת דוד, ר' משה באבן עזרא]. This careful observation proves that the world is not left to random chance. Instead, it is guided by specific divine providence and care [מלבי״ם]. Furthermore, by recognizing the obvious, open miracles in the world, a wise person learns to identify and appreciate the hidden kindness of God in all other areas of life [אלשיך].

This broad perspective also helps address the difficult challenge to faith that arises when wicked people live in peace while righteous people suffer. When looking at the complete system of the world, it becomes clear that God acts with perfect justice and faithfulness. Every action He takes stems from either strict justice or deep mercy, driven by profound reasons that are known only to Him [מאירי, רד״ק]. If a person encounters a situation that seems chaotic or unfair, they must attribute their confusion to the limits of human understanding rather than accusing God of injustice. They can move forward with confidence, knowing that His kindness will ultimately establish true and righteous justice [רד״ק, מאירי].
