תהלים, פרק ק״ז, פסוק כ״ט

Psalms 107:29Sefaria

יָקֵ֣ם סְ֭עָרָה לִדְמָמָ֑ה וַ֝יֶּחֱשׁ֗וּ גַּלֵּיהֶֽם׃

A raging tempest at sea is brought to a sudden halt, transformed into absolute silence by God. The deafening crash of the water is stilled, replacing the chaos of the storm with profound calm. Commentators explore the nature of this transformation. One perspective suggests that God simply alters the environment, turning the violent storm into peace [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. Conversely, another view emphasizes that the very storm God had previously summoned and stirred up is the exact same force He now returns to a state of rest [רד״ק, מצודת דוד].

The resulting quiet carries a layered meaning, expressing a complete and profound silence [מצודת ציון]. It represents a subtle duality: the active, sudden end to the deafening noise that previously filled the air, combined with the sheer, ongoing absence of any sound or turbulence [מלבי״ם].

As the waters settle, different views emerge regarding the relationship between the waves and the people experiencing them. The most straightforward understanding is that the physical waters of the sea simply quiet down and cease their roaring [ביאור שטיינזלץ, מצודת דוד]. However, others suggest the waves are attributed directly to the sailors, as the waters are specifically calmed for their sake [רד״ק]. Taking this a step further, another perspective links the turbulent waters to the passengers' own spiritual state, explaining that the waves rose up against them as a direct consequence of their sins [מאירי].

Yet, this sudden and absolute stillness introduces an unexpected challenge. With the storm entirely removed and the wind completely gone, the sailors face a new crisis. They are left stranded in the middle of the ocean, entirely unable to sail forward and reach their desired destination [אלשיך].
