Psalms 107:16Sefaria

כִּי־שִׁ֭בַּר דַּלְת֣וֹת נְחֹ֑שֶׁת וּבְרִיחֵ֖י בַרְזֶ֣ל גִּדֵּֽעַ׃

Deliverance from deep confinement serves as a powerful testament to the ability of God to shatter the most formidable barriers when saving those in distress. The primary approach among commentators understands this rescue as the release of captives from a physical dungeon. Earthly kings naturally confine their prisoners in heavily guarded fortresses to prevent any chance of escape [מאירי]. The captives face massive copper doors locked firmly against them [רש"י, ביאור שטיינזלץ], reinforced by heavy iron crossbars that secure the entrance [מצודת ציון]. God intervenes to completely break and cut down these impenetrable obstacles [ביאור שטיינזלץ, מצודת ציון]. However, this destruction is not necessarily a literal, physical shattering of metal. Rather, God orchestrates events behind the scenes so that the prisoners are freed and can escape their fortified captivity. Through this divine orchestration, it is as if God Himself personally smashed the doors and cut through the bars [אבן עזרא, מצודת דוד, מאירי].

In contrast to this physical interpretation, another perspective views the rescue as a deeply spiritual process of repentance and the acceptance of prayer [אלשיך]. In this light, the heavy copper doors represent the gates of prayer, which have been locked shut. The iron bars holding these doors tightly closed are a person's actual sins. These wrongdoings create negative, impure forces that ultimately cause all of the person's suffering. When God hears the cry of the distressed, He responds in two distinct stages. First, He shatters the copper doors, allowing the person's prayer to finally enter. Then, He cuts down the iron bars, effectively destroying the impure forces created by the sins that kept those gates locked in the first place.
