יוֹד֣וּ לַיהֹוָ֣ה חַסְדּ֑וֹ וְ֝נִפְלְאוֹתָ֗יו לִבְנֵ֥י אָדָֽם׃

Surviving life-threatening peril naturally awakens a deep sense of gratitude. Escaping the harsh realities of the wilderness prompts those who are saved to transform their private relief into a powerful, public declaration of faith.

The act of giving thanks unfolds in two distinct stages, serving both a personal and a public purpose [אבן עזרא, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. First, survivors offer direct gratitude to God for His kindness. This initial expression of thanks occurs immediately upon rescue, even before the survivors return to civilization. The second stage takes place once they reach a populated area. Here, they have a duty to share the story of their survival with others, publicizing the miracle to a broader audience [רד״ק, מצודת דוד]. This public sharing is not merely a display of thankfulness, but a deliberate effort to inspire faith in the listeners and draw them closer to God [אלשיך].

There is a profound distinction in how these rescue events are categorized, stemming from the difference between the divine and human perspectives. From God's infinite vantage point, altering the laws of nature or moving worlds to save a single human life requires no special effort. To Him, such acts are simply expressions of pure kindness. However, from a limited human viewpoint, these very same acts are experienced as awe-inspiring and miraculous. Therefore, the events are recognized as simple kindness when acknowledging God's role, but are celebrated as monumental wonders when recounted to other people [מלבי״ם, אלשיך].

Furthermore, the nature of this divine kindness stands in stark contrast to human favors. When a mortal ruler assists his subjects, the act is often driven by self-interest and a reliance on their future service. God, on the other hand, needs nothing from His creations and gains no personal benefit from saving them. His kindness is entirely genuine and selfless. Therefore, it is appropriate to direct all gratitude solely to Him, recognizing that every action He takes and every miracle He performs is done exclusively for the benefit of humanity [אלשיך].
