שָׁ֥נְנ֣וּ לְשׁוֹנָם֮ כְּֽמוֹ־נָ֫חָ֥שׁ חֲמַ֥ת עַכְשׁ֑וּב תַּ֖חַת שְׂפָתֵ֣ימוֹ סֶֽלָה׃

Hurtful words and malicious speech do not emerge from nowhere; they require careful preparation and a clear intent to cause pain. Wicked individuals plan their verbal attacks with deadly precision, keeping their destructive intentions stored just beneath the surface, much like a predator waiting in ambush. This preparation is compared to the sharpening of an arrow right before it is fired [רד״ק]. They ready their tongues to speak evil, acting exactly like a snake that coils and sharpens its tongue in the moments before it strikes to inject its poison [רד״ק, מצודת דוד, מאירי].

The danger they pose is driven by a deadly venom, rather than mere anger [רש״י, רד״ק, מאירי]. The primary approach among commentators is that the creature producing this poison is a particularly harsh and dangerous species of viper. Other perspectives suggest it refers more broadly to any fierce, biting wild animal [אבן עזרא], or even a spider [רש״י]. However, the spider identification is often rejected because the poison of a snake is significantly more potent and fitting for the context of such severe harm [מאירי].

This toxic substance is kept constantly at the ready, positioned right at their lips. Metaphorically, this indicates that the poison is always present, as these individuals never cease their evil speech [מצודת דוד]. On a physical level, when a person is consumed by rage and speaks in anger, saliva can gather on their lips, creating an image similar to venom dripping from the mouth of a snake [רד״ק, מאירי].

A closer look reveals two distinct types of harm being described. The image of the snake striking with its inner tongue represents people who slander and speak evil in secret. They hurt others purely out of a malicious nature, without gaining any personal benefit. In contrast, the creature with venom clearly visible on its lips symbolizes those who wage open conflict. These individuals harm others out of self-interest and for personal gain, engaging in acts like extortion and robbery [מלבי״ם].

This pattern of behavior is a permanent reality for the wicked, a constant truth that defines their entire lives [אבן עזרא, מאירי, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. From a historical perspective, this constant state also reflects the deep arrogance of evil forces, particularly the exile of Edom, who falsely believe their power and rule will last forever [אלשיך]. Faced with such calculated and enduring wickedness, the ultimate response is a heartfelt plea to God, asking Him for protection and rescue from those who actively plot to bring others down [רד״ק].
