תהלים, פרק ק״מ, פסוק ז׳

Psalms 140:7Sefaria

אָמַ֣רְתִּי לַ֭יהֹוָה אֵ֣לִי אָ֑תָּה הַאֲזִ֥ינָה יְ֝הֹוָ֗ה ק֣וֹל תַּחֲנוּנָֽי׃

Facing absolute helplessness and existential danger, a person is often left with prayer as their sole refuge. When hunted, surrounded by traps, and forced into constant wandering without the physical strength to fight back or escape, an individual realizes there is no one left to lean on but God. The primary approach among commentators is that turning to prayer in such moments stems from a deep recognition of this total vulnerability. Declaring absolute trust in God serves as an exclusive reminder that He alone is the source of strength and hope. This cry leans heavily on a deeply personal and historical bond. It recalls that God has always been a reliable source of help and protection in the past, forming the basis for the plea that He will listen once again [מצודת דוד].

This profound trust flows through two distinct channels. The first channel depends on an ongoing personal relationship and past merit, trusting in God as a constant savior. The second channel relies entirely on the raw power of a desperate cry. It is driven by the knowledge that God answers anyone who calls out to Him in pain, regardless of whether they have experienced His salvation before [מלבי״ם].

Beyond the immediate distress of a hunted individual, another perspective connects these themes to the desperate prayer of Queen Esther. In this view, the declaration of trust takes on a hidden, internal dimension. It becomes a quiet pledge of loyalty to Heaven, clarifying that any outward behaviors resembling foreign worship were merely a forced disguise. Her true, unwavering faith remains entirely with God, and it is firmly rooted in this hidden inner truth that the plea for Him to listen is made [אלשיך].
