תהלים, פרק כ״א, פסוק י׳

Psalms 21:10Sefaria

The ultimate downfall of those who oppose God is portrayed through intense imagery of fire and total destruction. The enemies are likened to a fiery oven [מצודת ציון, שטיינזלץ]. This does not mean they become a fire that harms others; rather, they are like the wood and straw that are entirely consumed within the flames [רד״ק, מאירי]. Alternatively, the imagery suggests that the enemies themselves are thrown directly into a blazing oven [אבן עזרא, מאירי].

Beyond just describing their end, the oven represents the constant nature and length of their punishment. The fire burns them without pause, much like the steady, continuous heat inside a furnace [מצודת דוד]. Going a step further, God actually grants the wicked a unique strength to endure the pain of the flames without being instantly destroyed. Just as an oven holds intense heat day after day while remaining whole, the wicked are kept intact to experience their punishment over time [אלשיך].

This judgment occurs at a specific moment of divine attention. The primary approach among commentators is that this moment represents God's anger and wrath, the time when He directs His fury toward the enemies. Yet, this moment can also be understood as a time of divine revelation and presence. This creates a sharp contrast: the very same moment of God's revealed presence that brings joy, light, and life to the righteous acts as a consuming fire that destroys the wicked [אלשיך].

The absolute ruin and destruction of these adversaries [מצודת ציון, מאירי, שטיינזלץ] is viewed by some as a prayer, a request for God to wipe out the enemies in His anger [רש״י]. Others understand it as a guaranteed promise that God will stand by the king and eliminate his foes [רד״ק]. Because this judgment is delivered directly by God rather than through an outside destructive force, the suffering of the wicked is prolonged. If they were judged solely by raw anger, they would instantly burn away like dry straw. However, because they stand directly before God Himself, their destruction is drawn out, and they are consumed by the fire over a long period [אלשיך].
