תהלים, פרק ע״ו, פסוק י׳

Psalms 76:10Sefaria

בְּקוּם־לַמִּשְׁפָּ֥ט אֱלֹהִ֑ים לְהוֹשִׁ֖יעַ כׇּל־עַנְוֵי־אֶ֣רֶץ סֶֽלָה׃

God steps into human history not out of a desire for revenge, but with the supreme purpose of rescuing the weak and oppressed. When He chooses to act, He shifts the balance of global power, ensuring the survival of those who cannot protect themselves. As God rises to execute justice, He directly targets the enemies who seek to harm His people [ביאור שטיינזלץ, מאירי]. The primary approach among commentators is that this divine judgment is directed at the nations of the world that plot against the Israelites. Some link this action to the specific judgment brought upon the enemies who laid siege to Jerusalem [אבן עזרא]. Viewing this through a more focused historical lens, others explain that God strikes down these enemies to save King Hezekiah and his followers [רש"י].

The central goal of God revealing Himself in this way is to save the humble of the earth. These downtrodden individuals are identified as the congregation of Israel, the children of Zion, who are often treated as lowly and oppressed among the nations [רד"ק, אלשיך]. Furthermore, this salvation is not a fleeting moment. It carries an eternal weight, meant to last forever and apply to every single generation [מצודת דוד, אלשיך].

Because of its eternal nature, this divine rescue has long-term effects that operate on two main levels. First, the public judgment of enemies creates global deterrence. When other nations witness the power of God, they become afraid to harm the Israelites in the future, which ultimately brings quiet and peace to the world [רד"ק, מצודת דוד]. On a deeper level, this divine intervention is absolutely essential for continuity. Without God stepping in to execute justice, the enemies of Israel would completely destroy them. Therefore, any present suffering or temporary anger is ultimately worthwhile. Through these difficult moments, a remnant of the nation is preserved, ensuring that the humble will receive their promised salvation in every generation [אלשיך].
