Looking at reality reveals an unimaginable gap between the physical expressions of creation and the Divine wisdom that drives them. There are two distinct levels of existence: the visible dimension and the hidden dimension. The physical world, with its natural phenomena and fixed order, openly displays God's immense power in both quantity and quality [ביאור שטיינזלץ, מלבי״ם]. In contrast, the hidden layer of providence represents the Divine reasons and plans operating behind the scenes. There is a spatial contrast to these dimensions. The physical works of creation are elevated and high, while the hidden thoughts reach infinitely deep. Together, these directions illustrate how far removed and beyond human understanding God's ways truly are [אבן עזרא, רד״ק].
A clear logical deduction follows: if a person cannot fully understand or contain even the visible natural world, they certainly cannot grasp the profound depths of hidden Divine plans [אלשיך]. These hidden plans involve deep existential questions, such as why the world was created at a specific moment rather than earlier [רד״ק], or the unseen processes of correcting and purifying the soul [אלשיך]. These matters are simply too profound for the ordinary human mind to comprehend [מצודת דוד]. However, there is a view that these secrets are not completely sealed away, but are instead revealed only to a select few individuals [מאירי].
The concealment of these Divine plans serves a deliberate theological purpose in how the world is governed. God hides His active providence behind the fixed laws of nature to allow for the existence of free will. If Divine intervention were completely visible and the wicked were punished immediately, sheer terror would prevent them from sinning, rendering the concepts of reward and punishment meaningless. Therefore, the true depth of Divine thought is expressed precisely through this concealment. Fools observe the success of the wicked and mistakenly conclude that the world runs on its own. In reality, this temporary illusion is a deliberate method designed to ultimately bring about the complete downfall of those who do evil [מלבי״ם].
