Psalms 92:7Sefaria

God’s governance of the world is deeply complex. Often, human beings struggle to make sense of the events unfolding around them, leading to profound misunderstandings of how God operates. Commentators debate exactly what aspect of reality people fail to grasp. One approach links this lack of understanding to the profound nature of God Himself, suggesting that humanity simply cannot comprehend His deep thoughts and great actions Another perspective looks outward at human society, suggesting that the confusion stems from the unsettling reality of wicked people succeeding in the world

When simple-minded individuals observe a world that appears chaotic, where evil people prosper, they are in danger of losing their faith entirely. Without understanding the true reasons behind this success, they may end up denying divine providence, the concept of reward and punishment, and even the very creation of the world [מאירי]. Wise individuals, however, see the larger picture. They recognize that the prosperity of the wicked is only temporary. God allows them to succeed in this world as a reward for the few good deeds they may have done, ensuring that they receive their payment now. Ultimately, this leads to their complete destruction, leaving them with no share in the World to Come [רד״ק].

To further explore why people misread reality, commentators analyze the different types of foolishness that cloud human judgment. One type of person is brutish and animalistic, lacking even the most basic knowledge that can be gathered through the senses. Because they are entirely disconnected from basic awareness, they simply remain ignorant Interestingly, even an important and highly respected person can fall into this category of brutish ignorance, completely failing to understand God's ways [אלשיך].

A second type of person does not necessarily lack intelligence. In fact, they might possess a broad mind and be fully aware of the facts. However, their personal desires and wickedness prevent them from following the path of wisdom. They refuse to use their intellect to draw logical conclusions or understand deeper concepts, which is why they fail to truly comprehend the world around them [מלבי״ם]. While some find specific meaning in these distinct descriptions of foolishness, another view maintains that there is no fundamental difference between them. Instead, the descriptions are simply a form of poetic repetition used to emphasize the overall tragedy of human ignorance [אבן עזרא].
