The infinite wisdom of God stands in sharp contrast to the limits of the human mind. While people quietly plot, boast of their power, or doubt divine providence, God’s awareness surrounds every hidden intention, revealing just how fragile and empty human schemes truly are.
A central theme is the sheer inability of humans to bring their plans to life on their own. A person possesses no independent power to execute their secret thoughts [אבן עזרא]. No matter how carefully a plan is crafted, God can easily disrupt it, making it impossible for anyone to succeed without His permission [רד״ק]. This reality is especially true for the wicked who scheme to achieve greatness, boast of their control, and trample on others. God knows that their ambitions are temporary, meaningless, and ultimately doomed to fail [רש״י, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. When measured against God’s vast wisdom, human plotting is nothing but pure emptiness, allowing Him to fully understand it with only the briefest glance [מצודת דוד].
Beyond the failure of human plans, this emptiness also describes the fundamental mistake made by those who deny God's involvement in the world. People sometimes foolishly believe that God is unaware of their actions, a thought that is itself entirely empty [רד״ק]. Certain individuals argue that God is simply too elevated to concern Himself with the lowly thoughts of human beings. Yet, the truth is that God knows every thought, even though they are lowly and insignificant. Often, this denial is born from a place of struggle, such as watching good people suffer. Rather than accusing God of being unfair, these individuals choose to completely deny His active guidance of the world, though their conclusions lack any real foundation [מאירי].
On a deeper level, God’s knowledge is not separate from who He is; He is the very essence of knowledge itself. He recognizes human thoughts in their most initial stages, long before they even take shape in the heart, while they are still complete nothingness. Because thoughts are spiritual and lack physical form, it is even easier for God to know them than it is to know physical actions. Despite our physical nature, God deeply understands our inner thoughts, and through this profound awareness, He is intimately connected to our pain [אלשיך].
