זכריה, פרק א׳, פסוק י״ג

Zechariah 1:13Sefaria

The long, painful exile raises difficult questions about when the suffering will end. When an angel asks about the duration of this exile, God responds with a message of profound hope and reconciliation. He speaks directly to the angel mediating the vision, delivering a highly positive and encouraging reply.

There are different understandings regarding how much of this divine exchange the prophet actually experienced. One perspective suggests that the prophet never heard God's exact reply. Instead, he realized the response was positive based on the instructions the angel later gave him to share with the public [רש״י], or because he was never told to record the specific details of the private conversation between God and the angel [מלבי״ם]. Taking a different view, others believe the prophet did hear God's answer, but only in a broad, general sense. He then relied on the angel to fill in the details and explain the true meaning of the message [אבן עזרא].

Ultimately, God shared this response with the angel so it could be passed down to the prophet, who was meant to broadcast it to the public [מצודת דוד]. The message itself consisted of inherently good and comforting words [מצודת ציון, ביאור שטיינזלץ, רד״ק]. These were the very prophecies of hope that the angel instructed the prophet to proclaim aloud to the people [רש״י, מצודת דוד].

Looking deeper, this comforting response served a profound purpose for the angel as well. It revealed that the extended length of the exile and the overwhelming hardships were actually designed for the ultimate benefit of the Israelites. God showed that all the past suffering would eventually transform into a massive comfort, paving the way for complete redemption and global justice [מלבי״ם].
