Deuteronomy 13:5Sefaria

In the face of the temptations and illusions presented by false prophets, a clear spiritual compass acts as a protective shield. The path of devotion is structured as a step-by-step ladder of spiritual growth, encompassing the entirety of the relationship between a person and the Creator, from physical actions to absolute mental attachment The foundation of this journey requires accepting the yoke of Heaven and seeking guidance exclusively from God and His true prophets, firmly rejecting any idols or impostors The primary approach among commentators is that walking after God means actively imitating His moral traits and ways. Just as He clothes the naked, visits the sick, comforts mourners, and buries the dead, a person is commanded to do the same

Building upon this moral foundation is the requirement of absolute faith that God alone controls life and death, and that He administers reward and punishment This profound reverence must completely overpower any fear or awe that a false prophet might try to evoke through miraculous signs or threats [ספורנו]. It is an awe inspired by the Creator's actions, leading to the acceptance of His decrees without questioning why, and without attempting to investigate His hidden essence Alongside this reverence is the strict observance of the Written Torah, encompassing all the positive and negative commandments delivered by Moses This serves as a definitive warning that no new commandment invented by a prophet can ever be accepted, especially if it relates in any way to idolatry [ספורנו].

Because the standard commandments are already established, the directive to listen to the divine voice is understood as an obligation to obey true prophets. This includes following a prophet's temporary instruction even if it momentarily contradicts standard law, much like the actions of Elijah at Mount Carmel Alternatively, this voice represents the Oral Torah transmitted by the sages across generations [רבנו בחיי, הכתב והקבלה], or the direct voice of God heard at Mount Sinai warning against idolatry—a decree that no future prophet can ever cancel [ביאור יש״ר, חומת אנך]. This obedience naturally flows into active service, which points specifically to the sacrificial rites in the Temple, an act of worship reserved uniquely for God In a broader sense, this also encompasses the "service of the heart," which is prayer [רבנו בחיי], and the demand that a person's every action be dedicated solely to God and to no other force [אבן עזרא, ספורנו].

The journey culminates in the pinnacle of spiritual perfection: absolute attachment to God. While some commentators view acts of kindness as part of the initial step of following God, [רש״י] specifically positions deeds such as visiting the sick and burying the dead at this final stage, identifying them as the practical means through which one truly clings to Him. Another perspective suggests that this intense connection is achieved by clinging to Torah scholars On a conscious level, this attachment requires maintaining a continuous stream of thought directed toward God, even while engaged in mundane, everyday matters It demands complete separation from idolatry to ensure the soul is never severed from its divine source Ultimately, this final stage is not just a demand but a promise. By fulfilling all the preceding steps, the righteous will merit the ultimate reward in the World to Come, where they will remain eternally attached to the radiance of the Divine presence
