The search for life's meaning and the true value of human effort lies at the very heart of human existence. When observing the world, one naturally wonders what lasting reward or actual profit remains from a lifetime of hard work [רש"י, מצודת ציון]. The physical world is a place governed by the sun, which dictates the passage of time, the changing of seasons, and the constant cycles of nature [אבן עזרא, מצודת דוד]. The primary approach among commentators is that chasing after material possessions within this earthly realm is ultimately empty. Any effort poured solely into the physical world cannot yield eternal perfection or lasting value. Worldly achievements are temporary and perishable; they leave no permanent mark, and no one can take their wealth with them after death [מצודת דוד, תעלומות חכמה, ביאור שטיינזלץ, אלשיך].

However, this sense of pointlessness comes with a vital condition. The emptiness applies only to purely material labor that is restricted to the physical world, especially when it takes the place of spiritual growth. In contrast, the effort invested in studying Torah, gaining wisdom, and developing a reverence for God yields an eternal reward. Spiritual pursuits and the human soul are not bound by the physical limits or the passing time of the earthly realm. Instead, they belong to a higher, lasting reality that exists entirely above and beyond the physical world [רש"י, תורה תמימה, אבן עזרא, אלשיך].

Beyond this central understanding, other perspectives offer different layers of meaning. One approach suggests that true lasting value is rooted in humility. A person achieves their greatest advantage, benefiting both body and soul, specifically by letting go of pride and viewing themselves with deep modesty [חומת אנך]. Additionally, a rich tradition ties these reflections directly to a severe personal crisis in King Solomon's life. According to this view, these thoughts emerged during a dark period when the demon Ashmedai forced the king off his throne. This sudden loss of authority served as a harsh, personal reminder of just how fragile and unstable worldly power truly is [תורה תמימה].
