Ecclesiastes 12:10Sefaria

King Solomon dedicated immense intellectual and spiritual energy to unlocking the secrets of existence and discovering absolute truth. His pursuit went far beyond merely collecting facts; it was a profound desire to grasp the inner essence of the world and the will of God. He went to great lengths to formulate ideas of true value and meaning, striving to reach the truth without making errors or misleading others [מצודת דוד, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. This search was directed toward a higher wisdom, driven by a need to understand exactly why the world was created the way it was and the ultimate purpose behind every single thing [אבן עזרא].

For some scholars, this intense search reflects the deep connection between Solomon’s wisdom and the tradition of the Torah. His ambition was to ensure that all his teachings were firmly rooted in the Torah, which serves as the ultimate source of honesty and truth [תעלומות חכמה]. In this view, the valuable insights he sought represent the Oral Law and the traditions handed down to Moses at Mount Sinai, while the honest records he focused on point toward the Written Law and the books of the Prophets [רש״י, צאינה וראינה]. Alternatively, his quest may have involved seeking out truths that had already been recorded in the past [ביאור שטיינזלץ], or perhaps searching for an ancient, lost commentary or a long-forgotten book of uprightness [אבן עזרא].

Beyond his search for wisdom, traditional sources reveal that Solomon’s aspirations were so elevated that he attempted to break through the limits of human capability. However, he received a message from heaven clarifying that certain boundaries simply cannot be crossed [תורה תמימה]. For instance, he wished to achieve the prophetic level of Moses and fully comprehend the ways of God. In response, a heavenly voice reminded him of the established truth that no prophet would ever arise who could equal Moses.

Driven by a desire for absolute truth, Solomon also wanted to judge legal cases relying entirely on his own deep intuition and insight, bypassing the standard requirement for witnesses and prior warnings. Once again, the heavenly voice intervened, instructing him that true honesty requires following the established rules of the Torah, which mandate that a legal decision must be based solely on the testimony of witnesses [תורה תמימה]. Furthermore, Solomon attempted to uncover the most profound divine secrets. He wanted to know the exact reward for fulfilling commandments and studying the Torah, and he tried to calculate the precise time of the final redemption. To both of these requests, God replied that such knowledge remains hidden and protected with Him alone, entirely concealed from humanity [תורה תמימה].
