Exodus 39:22Sefaria

וַיַּ֛עַשׂ אֶת־מְעִ֥יל הָאֵפֹ֖ד מַעֲשֵׂ֣ה אֹרֵ֑ג כְּלִ֖יל תְּכֵֽלֶת׃

The creation of the priestly garments required careful attention to both their materials and the exact methods used to make them. A central piece of this wardrobe was the robe, a garment over which the ephod was tightly belted and secured [ביאור שטיינזלץ].

This specific robe was crafted exclusively from blue threads. While similar phrasing elsewhere indicates that the blue dye itself must be pure and free from other pigments, the sages clarify that in this instance, the requirement applies to the physical makeup of the garment. The entire robe had to be made completely out of blue threads, without any other colors introduced [אבן עזרא, ביאור שטיינזלץ, תורה תמימה].

The account of the robe's creation places a special emphasis on the act of weaving. Typically, the materials of a garment are mentioned before the method of its construction, but here, the weaving process takes precedence. Furthermore, in God's original instructions, weaving was only specified for the collar of the robe. During the actual construction, however, this woven technique was applied to the entire garment [העמק דבר].

These details are part of a broader pattern in the story of the robe's creation, which is noticeably shorter and stylistically different from the original instructions. The description of the robe's opening is condensed, and the specific purpose of the bells attached to the hem, which were meant for entering the sanctuary, is left out entirely. Instead, the narrative focuses on the overall goal of the priestly service, simply confirming that the work was completed exactly as God commanded [קאסוטו].
