Exodus 39:24Sefaria

Crafting the High Priest's garments demanded extraordinary precision and artistry, particularly in the intricate details bordering the bottom edge of the robe. At this lower hem, skilled artisans wove threads into the distinct shape of pomegranates [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. The weaving process for these ornaments was highly complex. Every single type of thread used to form the pomegranates was doubled and carefully twined from eight separate strands, creating a thick and elaborate texture [תורה תמימה].

A discussion arises regarding exactly how these woven pomegranates were constructed and attached to the hem alongside golden bells. One perspective suggests that the pomegranates were not woven directly onto the robe itself. Instead, they were crafted as separate, hollow pieces. According to this view, the golden bells were first placed inside these hollow woven pomegranates, and only then were the completed ornaments sewn onto the hem of the garment [רמב״ן, הטור הארוך].

However, another approach strongly disagrees with this arrangement. This viewpoint maintains that the golden bells and the woven pomegranates hung side by side in a single, alternating row along the hem, rather than the bells being hidden inside the pomegranates. This is supported by the sequence of the construction process, which indicates that the pomegranates were placed on the hem first, followed by the separate creation and attachment of the golden bells [אור החיים].
