Exodus 39:31Sefaria

וַיִּתְּנ֤וּ עָלָיו֙ פְּתִ֣יל תְּכֵ֔לֶת לָתֵ֥ת עַל־הַמִּצְנֶ֖פֶת מִלְמָ֑עְלָה כַּאֲשֶׁ֛ר צִוָּ֥ה יְהֹוָ֖ה אֶת־מֹשֶֽׁה׃ {ס}

Securing the golden headplate to the High Priest serves as the crowning touch in the preparation of the sacred garments. This final step transforms a golden band into a functioning symbol of divine service, carefully positioned to share space with other holy items worn on the head.

To hold the headplate in place, blue threads are used to tie it to the turban. The primary approach among commentators is that because the gold band only stretches from ear to ear, these threads are essential for fastening it securely around the back of the head [רש״י, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. Although sometimes described as a single thread, it actually consists of a system of multiple cords. The headplate features holes at both ends and in the middle, with two threads passing through each opening. This intricate weaving solves a practical mystery regarding how the materials interact. Because the threads are positioned both above and below the edges of the gold plate, they securely lock it in place from all sides [רש״י].

Positioning these items on the High Priest requires careful spatial planning. The headplate rests low on the forehead, while the turban sits higher up. A deliberate gap is left between them, exposing a portion of the priest's hair. This specific space is reserved for wearing phylacteries. Therefore, the headplate is not physically resting on top of the turban. Instead, the blue threads suspend the headplate, tying it to the turban so that it sits like a crown, with all the cords gathering and knotting at the back of the neck [רש״י].

This tying method, particularly the threads rising from the middle of the headplate toward the top of the head, creates a potential physical conflict with the phylacteries. The phylacteries carry a stricter level of holiness than the headplate because they contain numerous mentions of God's name, whereas the headplate bears His name only once. To honor this hierarchy, the middle threads do not run directly up the center of the head. Instead, they are routed carefully along either side of the phylacteries, ensuring no overlap occurs that might compromise their sacred dignity [משכיל לדוד].
