Exodus 39:39Sefaria

The presentation of the outer courtyard items to Moses followed a very specific sequence, revealing the deep understanding of the craftsmen. When dealing with the inner Tabernacle, the physical walls and partitions were established first, followed by the sacred vessels. However, for the outer courtyard, this order was reversed. The vessels—specifically the bronze altar used for burnt offerings [ביאור שטיינזלץ] and the washing basin—were brought forward before the outer curtains were even presented. This deliberate shift reflects how perfectly the chief artisan aligned with the will of God, anticipating His future instructions. When God later commanded the actual assembly of the site, He specifically directed that the altar be positioned before the surrounding courtyard curtains were hung [העמק דבר].

Accompanying this altar were its various components, most notably a bronze grating crafted as a finely woven, net-like structure [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. Though central to the early worship, a subtle pause in the traditional chanting notes just before the mention of the altar hints at its temporary nature. The bronze altar was not destined to last forever. Generations later, during the era of the permanent Temple, this specific altar lost its formal legal status as a sacred vessel. It was eventually disqualified from its original use, essentially merging into and becoming a functional part of the Temple courtyard floor [צפנת פענח].
