Genesis 5:24Sefaria

וַיִּתְהַלֵּ֥ךְ חֲנ֖וֹךְ אֶת־הָֽאֱלֹהִ֑ים וְאֵינֶ֕נּוּ כִּֽי־לָקַ֥ח אֹת֖וֹ אֱלֹהִֽים׃ {ס}

Enoch stands out as one of the most exceptional and mysterious figures in early human history. While the surrounding generations follow a predictable pattern that inevitably ends in a natural passing, Enoch's story breaks this cycle, introducing a profound mystery regarding the nature of his righteousness and his sudden departure from the world. His life was defined by an absolute devotion to God. He channeled all his desires into loving Him, choosing a life of isolation to focus entirely on higher wisdom while rejecting physical materialism Achieving such a towering spiritual state is a rarity attributed to only a select few throughout history [רבנו בחיי]. Because his lifespan was significantly shorter than those of his contemporaries, people might easily conclude that he died young as a divine punishment for wickedness. To prevent this misconception, his extraordinary righteousness is heavily emphasized [בכור שור].

However, the stability of this righteousness is a subject of debate. The primary approach among commentators suggests that Enoch was easily influenced and prone to falling back into corrupt ways [רש״י]. Living in a deeply flawed world long before the giving of the Torah, he lacked the spiritual tools to independently elevate his surroundings, making his righteousness entirely dependent on divine inspiration. Recognizing that Enoch would not be able to withstand the temptations of his generation indefinitely, God swiftly removed him from the world while he was still innocent Conversely, another perspective argues that God removed him precisely because his flawless righteousness would serve as a harsh accusation against his wicked peers [פרדס יוסף].

The description of his sudden absence serves primarily as a gentle euphemism, deliberately avoiding the harsh reality of death [קאסוטו]. It points to a sudden, absolute disappearance. Enoch did not suffer from illness or pain, and his peers had no reason to expect his life to end prematurely. He simply vanished without leaving a single trace behind Without further clarification, those searching for him would have easily assumed he had wandered off into the desert or fallen prey to a wild animal [העמק דבר]. Yet, some view his disappearance as a paradox. Rather than signifying an end, it indicates eternal existence; though he is no longer visible in this physical realm, he continues to live and endure in higher dimensions

The exact nature of how God took him sparks a deep conceptual debate over whether he experienced physical death or ascended to heaven alive. One approach maintains that he suffered a premature physical death However, this was no ordinary passing brought on by plague or suffering. Instead, it was a respectful, divine passing, often described as a kiss, where God redeemed his soul from the grave and elevated it directly to the upper realms [רד״ק, קאסוטו].

In stark contrast, many commentators agree that Enoch never tasted death at all. God took him body and soul, entirely alive and whole, directly into the Garden of Eden In a miraculous ascension similar to that of the prophet Elijah, Enoch's flesh was transformed into fire, and he became a supreme angel This extraordinary event was intended to serve as an eternal testimony to the immortality of the soul, demonstrating exactly how human life, both in body and spirit, would have endured had the first man not sinned [רבנו בחיי]. Ultimately, righteous individuals who are elevated alive to the heavens continue their existence to actively work toward repairing the world [פני דוד].
