Human nature carries an inherent vulnerability to failure. This reality becomes particularly critical when a nation falls into widespread wrongdoing, a situation that provokes divine anger and leads to the severe consequence of exile. The universal reality of human imperfection is understood in two distinct ways. On one hand, it serves as a basic description of the natural human condition. It is simply the way of people to fall short, make mistakes, and sometimes even commit intentional wrongs [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. Alternatively, it points to a much more extreme scenario, describing a time when society has deteriorated to the point that not even a single righteous, sinless individual remains whose personal merit could shield the rest of the nation [מצודת דוד].

Without anyone left to protect the people from the consequences of their actions, God becomes angry with them [מצודת ציון, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. As a direct punishment, they are handed over to their enemies and taken into captivity [מצודת ציון]. These captors then force the people into exile, carrying them away to foreign territories, regardless of whether those lands are near or far [ביאור שטיינזלץ].
