II Chronicles 6:31Sefaria

לְמַ֣עַן יִירָא֗וּךָ לָלֶ֙כֶת֙ בִּדְרָכֶ֔יךָ כׇּ֨ל־הַיָּמִ֔ים אֲשֶׁר־הֵ֥ם חַיִּ֖ים עַל־פְּנֵ֣י הָאֲדָמָ֑ה אֲשֶׁ֥ר נָתַ֖תָּה לַאֲבֹתֵֽינוּ׃ {ס}

The ultimate purpose of the Temple goes far beyond simply providing relief from immediate troubles. It is designed to inspire a deep process of change, awe, and living an honest life. When someone experiences a direct response from God, it leaves a permanent spiritual mark that shapes their behavior for the rest of their days.

The link between answered prayers and this deep sense of awe comes from recognizing God's personal involvement in human lives. As people watch their hardships fade away following sincere prayer and a return to the right path, it becomes clear that God's hand actively brought about their rescue [מצודת דוד]. This clarity leads to the understanding that their suffering or illness was not the result of blind chance, but a direct outcome of their own misdeeds. It is precisely the realization that God forgives and removes the punishment after they pray at the Temple that plants a deep, lasting awe within them [רד״ק]. Recognizing this system of divine justice, where God responds directly to how a person acts, wakes up those doing wrong, urging them to abandon their harmful paths and draw closer to Him [רש״י].

Beyond the actual response to prayer, the nature of the Temple itself inspires its own unique reverence. Knowing that the Temple is the central place where all prayers gather and are heard forces a person to realize that it is impossible to lie or put on a false front in God's presence. This feeling of absolute transparency strips away all excuses, leading to genuine awe and a sincere commitment to walk faithfully in His ways [ביאור שטיינזלץ].
