A collective prayer rises to heaven, carrying the hopes of a nation asking God to listen and act on their behalf. At the heart of this appeal is a specific request for divine intervention, which is understood in two distinct ways.

The primary approach among commentators explains this as a call for justice. It is a plea for God to bring judgment and exact revenge upon the enemies of the Israelites and the idol-worshipping nations that have caused them harm [רש י ומצודת דוד].

Alternatively, another perspective shifts the focus entirely away from conflict. In this view, the appeal is not about judgment or retribution against enemies. Instead, it is a request for God to provide for the people directly, fulfilling all their needs and ensuring that they lack nothing [רש״י].
