II Chronicles 6:6Sefaria

The spiritual and leadership foundation of the nation rests entirely on two central pillars chosen by God: a sacred space and a royal dynasty. This selection acts as a direct response to a prior state of absence. Up until this pivotal moment, God had not designated a specific city for His presence to dwell, nor had He selected a permanent leader for the people [רש״י]. Now, the purpose is clear. Jerusalem is established as the permanent home for God's name, and David is appointed as the king to govern Israel [ביאור שטיינזלץ].

Beyond the practical roles of a capital city and a monarch, these choices carry profound spiritual weight. The physical city of Jerusalem mirrors a spiritual Jerusalem in the heavens, and the Divine Presence itself is referred to by this name. The inherent holiness of the city is rooted deeply in its history and geography. It contains Mount Moriah, the site of the Binding of Isaac, and holds the Foundation Stone. According to the sages, this stone is the very place where God prayed that His mercy would overcome His anger [חומת אנך].

Similarly, the selection of David is not a random political appointment but is tied to the very root of his soul. David is considered a reincarnation of the first man, Adam. He is deeply bound to the Divine Presence, representing a living, eternal reality. This elevated spiritual stature is what makes him uniquely suited to lead the nation. Because of this profound spiritual connection, rebelling against the Davidic dynasty is not merely a political crime. It is viewed as an attack on the deepest spiritual foundations, a severe offense that warrants the penalty of death [חומת אנך].
