שמואל ב, פרק ז׳, פסוק ט׳

II Samuel 7:9Sefaria

Divine providence accompanied David throughout his entire journey, marked by a chain of kindnesses that transformed him from a hunted refugee into a world-renowned king. God granted him constant protection during his desperate flight from Saul and even while he lived among the Philistines [אברבנאל]. This divine support eventually led to the downfall of Saul and his men [אברבנאל], and allowed David to overcome his adversaries in his various wars [מלבי״ם].

It was precisely from this profound sense of relief and rest from his enemies that David felt the sudden urge to build the Temple. This matched the Commandment to construct a permanent house for God during times of peace [רש״י]. Beyond these physical victories, however, a deep spiritual reality was taking shape. The fact that God miraculously subdued David's enemies proved that the Divine Presence already rested within him. Through his devotion, David himself had been transformed into a living Tabernacle and sanctuary for God [אלשיך].

God also promised to elevate David's legacy. The primary approach among commentators is that this refers to global fame. David became known across all lands as a mighty ruler, standing equal to the greatest historical kings and heroes. This widespread recognition guaranteed him an eternal and stable kingdom [מלבי״ם, רד״ק, מצודת דוד, ביאור שטיינזלץ, אברבנאל]. Alongside this historical perspective, a parallel tradition suggests that true greatness refers to the nation's Patriarchs. God promised David that his spiritual level and devotion would rival that of the holy forefathers [אלשיך, אברבנאל]. A practical expression of this spiritual height remains in daily prayer. Just as the liturgy honors Abraham with the phrase "Shield of Abraham," David earned the eternal distinction of having his name sealed in the blessing "Shield of David" [רש״י, מצודת דוד, רד״ק, אברבנאל].

Ultimately, a central message emerges from this sequence of divine favors. Because God had so thoroughly guarded David, elevated his name, and turned him into a living sanctuary, there was no immediate need for David to construct a physical building for Him [אלשיך, אברבנאל].
