King David received great wealth during his reign, but he did not keep these vast treasures for his own personal use. Instead, he directed them toward a higher, sacred purpose. The various offerings and gifts that were brought to him were all set aside [מצודת דוד]. David dedicated this property entirely to God, specifically preserving it for the future construction of the Holy Temple [רד״ק, ביאור שטיינזלץ].
This holy dedication included more than just the gifts he received from others. He combined these offerings with the silver and gold that he captured as spoils of war from the various nations he fought and defeated [מצודת דוד, מצודת ציון].
